Advanced Summer Camp for students age 11-14
who show high promise and love mathematics

Plenaries for 2009


8:45 am, Tues-Sat

   There were history plenaries throughout the camp, by Glen
  (Prof van Brummelen) for the first two weeks, covering up
  through medieval Islamic mathematics, and during the last two
  weeks by Coach D (Prof Thomas Drucker), continuing up through
  the current day.

11 am, Tues-Sat

  The main mathematics plenary of the day.

  Week 1:  Prof John Conway of Princeton, each day on a
  different topic starting with the calendar for the kickoff
  lecture, and continuing with such topics as fibonacci numbers,
  infinity, knots and tangles.

  Week 2: A variety of speakers, mostly from our own staff

    July 7: Dr A (Prof Amelia Taylor), 
            Mathematics of the Game of Set
    July 8-9: Prof Gene Abrams UC Col Springs, 
              Mad Veterinarian Puzzles
    July 10: Dr A, Complex Numbers
    July 11: Dr V (Prof Sam Vandervelde), 
             Ramsey Theory (an intro
             to his Breakout in the next week)

  Week 3: A variety of speakers from our own staff

    July 14: Dr V, Euler Numbers
    July 15: Winston (counselor), 
             Game Theory and the Prisoner's Dilemma
    July 15: Mr M (Prof Maurer), 
             Applied and Ill-Posed Problems
    July 16: Prof Molly Maxwell, Colorado College, 
             Pruefer's Proof
    July 17: Prof John Watkins, Colorado College, 
             Chessboard Problems 
             (an intro to his breakout in the next week)

  Week 4: Prof Francis Su of Harvey Mudd College, 
  on probability and card shuffling.

  On 7/21, there was an additional special plenary 
           in the afternoon by Prof David Grant, UC Boulder,  
           on cryptosystems.

3 pm, Tues-Fri

 Writing and Proof mini-plenaries (20-25 minutes) by 
 Mr M (Prof Stephen Maurer), mostly using examples from 
 student work on the Qualifying Test.
