Part VI. Other Matters
-
1. What times do you suggest we have her arrive and depart from the
airport or if we are bringing her and taking her back?
A.
The arrival and departure days are Sundays. For instance, if the camp lists its dates as June 29 to July 27, the numerals correspond to Sundays the first of which being the arrival day and the other the departure. We prefer a 10 am to 4 pm arrival time at the airport for those coming by air. Clearly, for those students/parents flying across the continent - for instance, from the west coast when the camp is in the east in a given year - these times should be only guidelines to book flights, but they can arrive any time if necessary. However we like to have no student departures FROM CAMP in the afternoon.
For other details, please visit the GETTING THEREpage.
2. Why was this university chosen as the campus for the program?
- A. We looked for a campus that is safe, fun, and beautiful, in that order.
3. If we were to apply/register for MathPath and Dave were to be asked in
mid-May to participate in the MOSP program, could we obtain a refund? As a
seventh grader, this is highly unlikely, but he is continuing the testing
process, and I prefer to know that answer now.
A. Yes, those who will be attending MOSP will get a full refund of fees paid. For details, see the web pages on fee refunds.
4. I noted that the advisor to student ratio is 12:1. Are these advisors
with the students throughout the day? Who are the advisors, and how are they
chosen? If a student is uncomfortable with an advisor's actions and/or
attitudes is there easy access to another adult?
A. The advisors are with the students throughout the day in a non-intrusive manner and it is their responsibility to ensure that each student under their group is safe throughout the day, involved in all the main academic activities, participating in at least one evening physical activity, eating good meals and in sufficient quantities, calls home often, and in bed by 10:30 pm. Advisors were selected based on their social skills from among the mathematically outstanding undergraduate students who applied. We may also have junior counselors whose mature attitude is outstanding - junior counselor are chosen only from MathPath alumni; the reason for this restriction is that we know the applicant well from their days at MathPath. A student who is uncomfortable with an advisor's actions and/or
attitudes will be expected to talk about the matter to the Camp Director.
5. May a roommate be prearranged? May a student be given contact information for an unknown roommate prior to camp time?
A. Students may request roommates. Otherwise, roommates will be allocated by the camp based just on the criterion that the room mates be of the same age and gender. Students having difficulty with their roommates will be reallocated within 24 hours - we find that this is a rare occurrence. Students will find out who their room mates are immediately after check-in.
6. I noticed that students have access to campus computers. Are video games allowed? Is internet service available? If yes to either of these, are these activities monitored (and by what policy)? Do students have email access?
A.
Video games strictly forbidden! Students will have email access and no student will have to wait more that 15 minutes to get on to the computer. Staff will supervise the email facilities. Students will not be allowed to download any software into the university's computers.
7. Did I correctly understand that students have telephone access in their room? I would like to verify that a call home is readily available.
- A. YES! This is very important since it speaks to the home-sickness issue; the parent will be able to telephone the student right into the room. The daily check-off sheets turned in at 10:30 pm by each Advisor to the Camp Director will indicate if the student has been in contact with the parents.
Advisors will ensure that student-communication is regular.
8. What kind of food do you serve to the hungry participants? Are there nutritious and well-balanced meals of "brainfood" to ensure productive math "thinking"?
A. We have a food committee comprised of teachers, staff, and parents to ensure that the students get nutritious food.
