Parent Resources

Homeschooling the gifted

I am Kathleen Zehender, the moderator of the Parent Resources/ Homeschooling pages and a member of the Advisory Board of MathPath. The education of young people profoundly gifted in mathematics is very dear to me. I am especially interested in talking to or emailing other parents who are homeschooling such children. Such parents are more than welcome to email me directly at the address below.

These pages list books for parents who are homeschooling a highly gifted child. When we find other suitable materials such as software, films or gadgets, we will list them. I invite your advice, comments and recommendations.

Gifted Children at Home: A Practical Guide for Homeschooling Families by Janice Baker, Kathleen Julicher, and Maggie Hogan.

Advice and wisdom from families who have been there. How to homeschool, the special needs of gifted learners, choosing curricula, acceleration, special opportunities, and resource lists.

The Complete Home Learning Source Book by Rebecca Rupp

While not written specifically for gifted children, this book's 865 pages are full of fun, creative ideas and resources for learning all subjects at home. Invaluable for the homeschool family that doesn't want a plain textbook approach.

Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics by Liping Ma

What is needed in order to develop a "profound understanding of fundamental mathematics"? Ma compares US teachers and learning environments to their Chinese counterparts, while attempting to answer this question.
