Advanced Summer Camp for students age 11-14
who show high promise and love mathematics

Staff & Faculty

TEACHER-PARTICIPANT

Imagine spending a month on a beautiful university campus in a beautiful town with professors and mathematics teachers who are experts at communicating their love of mathematics and problem solving. Imagine helping out at problem-solving sessions, attending lectures, and spending weekends hiking, touring, and engaging in vacation activities! See these comments from former Participants.

You will be a full participant in faculty-staff activities. Indeed, because you work year round with middle school kids, the rest of us will often seek your advice. Your one specific job at MathPath will be helping with the MATHCOUNTS practice sessions at camp, which run as 1-week courses ("breakout" courses). However, you are encouraged to attend the many other sessions at MathPath, including plenary talks and breakout courses given by world-famous mathematicians, and to participate in all social events and trips.

In addition, if you are especially well qualified and willing, you may be able to take on additional responsibilities, teaching one or more of your own breakout courses or giving one or more plenary lectures. For instance, you might give a 1-week AMC8 or AMC10 course, or a course on some special topic you know. Such additional involvement would normally be decided only after you have been at camp for a while and we have gotten to know you.

So participating in MathPath can be a very broadening experience (you learn more mathematics and get new ideas about how to help very talented kids) as well as fun – the reason a teacher would take time in the summer to do this.

We prefer that you can attend for the entire camp, including a day or two of set-up and close-down at the ends. However, in special circumstances we will consider applicants who can stay for as little as 2 weeks.

Like other faculty, you will receive travel plus room and board on campus. For performing the required duties (helping with MATHCOUNTS practice) you will receive $312.50 per week. Like other faculty, you will also receive $625 for each breakout course your run yourself, and $125 for each plenary lecture.

TEACHER-OBSERVER

If you are not selected as the teacher-participant, you may also opt to attend the summer program as a teacher-observer and pay a fee of $1750. The $1750 fee covers room and board for four weeks, and your choice of activities at camp, including all field trips and outings. Why would you do this? See the statement by our 2010 Teacher Observer, John Howe of Princeton Day School.
